How to Live Thrifty

Save Money and Live Thrifty
In times of economic downturn, many people start to look for ways to reduce their household budget and save extra cash. Living a thrifty lifestyle does not have to mean doing without. Making small changes will allow you to save money and still enjoy your favorite treats and activities. Being frugal can help you save for retirement, pay off your credit cards faster or even just save money for a dream vacation. To live in a thrifty way, you need to pay attention to your day-to-day expenses.

Track your spending for at least 2 weeks. You won't really know how to live a thriftier lifestyle until you know where your money is currently going. Write down every time you spend money and take a look at it at the end of the month. You will see obvious ways to reduce the small daily expenses that many of us accrue.

Scour the Internet when you have to make purchases. Because of the easy access to information, you can compare prices from more stores in less time. Check your local stores as well as online providers to find the best price.

Turn off the lights and other electronics in your home when you are not using them. Open a window and let in the natural light instead. Leaving electronics on can use a tremendous amount of extra energy, costing you money. Also, unplug chargers when you are not using them. Your cell phone charger is still using a residual amount of electricity when it is plugged into the wall.

Cut back on your cable. You probably don't really need 500 channels. Reduce your cable package or eliminate it altogether and save a large chunk of money every year. If you decide you really can't live without it, call your cable company and see if there are any promotions or discounts available to you.

Use coupons when you do your regular grocery shopping. Many websites offer free printable coupons you can take with you to the grocery store. Check sites like BettyCrocker.com for coupons of a variety of name brand products (see link in Resources). Combining manufacturer's coupons with store discounts can lead to major grocery savings.

Eat at home most nights. When you do go out, look for available deals and discounts. If you are a frequent restaurant diner, consider purchasing an Entertainment Book for local restaurants (see link in Resources). These collections of coupons typically cost around $30, but provide 2-for-1 deals at local restaurants and places of interest.

Anyone can say the words “I love you,” but to show someone that you love them goes beyond words alone. Yes the words do mean something and are always nice to hear, but actions display love in ways that words cannot.

Let your actions and behaviors be a reflection of your love. Treat those you love with kindness and respect. Be there for them when they need you and show them the goodness in your heart. Being there can mean providing a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, being a friend, parent, spouse, lover, teacher, and many other things. There are several ways to express love through your actions and the core of each of them is being true and coming from your heart.

Be honest with the people you love. Sometimes the truth hurts but it’s always better to show honesty. You don’t lie or mislead the people you love. People sometimes say, “I’m only telling you this because I love you.” When you show honesty, you’re also showing that you’re trustworthy and people respect that.

Share your time with those you love. Time is a precious gift and everyone appreciates it when they get to spend time with those that they love. Sometimes you may have to sacrifice other things in order to be able to spend time with the ones you love.

Pay attention to the things that are going on in your loved one's lives. Be encouraging and helpful. If you see someone going through a hard time, let them know you’re there for them even if all you have to offer is your support. Things that you may consider to be small can make a big difference to someone else. A compliment can brighten someone’s day. A gift for no reason can be one way you express your love.

Say it. Although actions speak louder than words, everyone needs to hear the words “I love you.” Think of how special you feel when those words are said to you. You want the ones you love to feel special too. When you have children, you tell them you love them all the time. Even though you may believe that your actions show your love, if someone doesn’t hear the words come from your mouth, they might not think that you love them. To some people, words really mean a lot

Born in New Zealand, Dr. Richards obtained a Master of Arts degree with first class honours in English from Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1966. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from Laval University (a French-Language University) in Quebec City, Canada in 1972.
He has worked in many parts of the world, including New Zealand, Canada, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States. After completing his PhD, he taught in Indonesia and was then appointed specialist in applied linguistics at the Regional Language Centre Singapore, under the auspices of the New Zealand Government. Later he was Senior Lecturer in English at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, before being appointed Full professor in the Department of English as a Second Language at the University of Hawaii in 1981. In 1989 he returned to Hong Kong to set up a new department of English at the City University of Hong Kong, where he was head of the department of English and also chair professor. In 1996 he returned to his home country for two years to set up an MA program at theUniversity of Auckland. In 1999 Dr. Richards retired from full-time university teaching and administration and since then has taught for part of each year at the Regional Language Centre, (RELC), in Singapore, while making his primary residence in Sydney Australia. At RELC, Dr. Richards teaches on the MA in Applied Linguistics, as well as the RELC Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics. In Sydney, Dr. Richards gives guest lectures at the Faculty of Education at the University of Sydney.
Dr. Richards is a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops for language teachers, and visits some 12 countries every year.
He has written over 60 articles and 20 books. Many of hisbooks and articles are classics in the field of second language teaching and have been translated into many different languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Arabic. Among his well known professional books are Error Analysis, (1974), Reflective Teaching in Second Language Classrooms (1996, with Charles Lockhart), Beyond Training(1998), The Language Teaching Matrix (1990), Curriculum Development in Language Teaching (2001), Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching(second edition 2001, with Ted Rodgers), Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics (4th edition 2010, with Richard Schmidt),Professional Development for Language Teachers (with Tom Farrell), Cambridge University Press 2005, and Practice Teaching (with Tom Farrell), Cambridge University Press 2011.
His classroom textbooks are also widely used and have helped millions of students around the world learn English. These include Springboard, Person to Person, Tactics for Listening, Passages, and the best-selling seriesInterchange.
Professor Richards has for many years made himself available as a speaker at many professional conferences without a fee, and supported scholarship programs in different parts of the world. In recognition of this the Presidents of De La Salle University, Manila and of Philippine Normal University, Manila, presented Professor Richards with a citation in 2001 which states:
"Generous in sharing his expertise with junior members of the profession, unstinting in his efforts to promote excellent language teaching in all parts of the world, indefatigable in showing the applications of theory to teaching practice in the classroom, Dr. Richards is a fine example of what English language education and applied linguistics can accomplish."
In 2010 Dr. Richards was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature by Victoria University, Wellington, in recognition of his contributions to English language teaching and the arts.
In 2011 Dr. Richards was made an honorary professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Sydney, Australia.

سالِ بي باران
